Watering newly planted plants is crucial for their survival and long-term health in a landscape. Here’s why:
1. Establishing Roots
New plants have limited root systems and can’t access water deep in the soil. Consistent watering helps roots grow and spread into the surrounding soil, which is essential for stability and nutrient uptake.
2. Reducing Transplant Shock
When a plant is moved from a pot or nursery bed to the ground, it undergoes stress known as transplant shock. Adequate watering helps ease this transition and promotes recovery.
3. Preventing Wilting and Leaf Loss
Without enough water, new plants can quickly wilt, drop leaves, or die—especially in hot or windy conditions. Regular watering maintains turgor pressure (the water pressure within cells) to keep plants upright and healthy.
4. Promoting Strong Growth
Water is vital for photosynthesis, nutrient absorption, and cell development. A well-hydrated plant will grow faster, fill out better, and establish more quickly in its new environment.
5. Supporting Microbial Activity
Moist soil supports beneficial microbes and fungi that help plants absorb nutrients and resist diseases. Dry soil can delay or weaken these biological partnerships.
Best Practice:
- Water deeply and regularly for the first several weeks after planting.
- Use mulch around the base of the new plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and protection from sharp & hot rock.
- Adjust frequency based on weather (hot, dry & windy conditions require more water, rainy days equals less. You get the picture!), soil type, and plant species (don’t worry, Luxury is here to help with this info!).
Consistent watering during the early stages is the single most important step you can take to ensure the success of a new landscape (softscape) installation.
Once Luxury Landscape completes a landscape installation where plants were planted, we’re ready to turn it over to the customer. Taking care of new plants can be stressful or even intimidating, especially if you don’t consider yourself a green thumb. Luxury wants our customers to be successful and ease the stress, therefore, we offer our customers a recommended watering schedule and a plant care sheet. This has shown to be highly effective for establishing young plants. We like the saying that says the first year plants sleep, the second year plants creep and the third year plants leap! So by practicing a little patience and the right amount of care, you can have a beautiful landscape.
Luxury Landscape loves educating our customers and helping them protect their new investment! Give us a call, we’re happy to help!
